Frequently Asked Questions:
Fencing is one of the original Olympic sports, a medal event in every modern Games since 1896. With roots in the European tradition of dueling and military training, modern fencing is a fast paced sport that is equal parts of physical challenge and mental puzzle.
How does it work? At the end of each fencer’s sword is a small tip, that when pressed, activates a light on a scoring machine to indicate a touch has been registered. Bouts are won when one person scores 5 points or 3 minutes elapse.
Is it safe? Yes! It may seem exotic to someone who’s unfamiliar with fencing, but it’s quite safe and not a violent activity by any means. Fencers wear masks to protect their heads, heavy duty jackets and gloves to protect their arms and torso, as well as plastic chest plates. The tips need very little pressure to register a touch so the hits are actually quite light. Fencing has a lower injury rate than more well-known sports such as soccer and basketball.
What do we fence? At Five Points Fencing Academy we do epee fencing. Epee is the traditional dueling weapon so you were trained to get the first touch. Target area is the entire body of your opponent. It’s a skillful event, requiring mental and physical stamina.
What's fencing like? One popular description of fencing is physical chess. It's a fast paced sport, exerting energy much like tennis or racquetball, however there is a lot of strategy and technique involved as well. It's challenging and fulfilling both physically and intellectually!
